Virginia Tech’s latest road-helmet rankings put five models at the top as of September 24, 2026. The lab’s system uses 24 impact tests and assigns STAR scores; smaller numbers indicate stronger performance. Its rankings focus on crash protection, while Bicycling’s team adds ride testing for fit, comfort, airflow, weight, and everyday usefulness.

The Pikio Si Oblik led the road category and ranked first among all helmets tested, with a 4.61 STAR score. Bicycling’s sample, however, had chin straps that felt too short for several testers. Pikio said production versions would use longer straps, and the publication plans another evaluation.

The POC Cytal impressed testers with large vents and strong airflow despite its substantial shape. P2R’s A20 Mips stood out as the value option at $60, offering a strong lab result, easy adjustment, and a rechargeable rear light. Testers found it most comfortable for rounder heads, with some temple pressure reported. Together, the results show why a helmet’s safety ranking is only part of the buying picture: the model also has to fit securely and work well on the rides you actually take.

What to know
  • Virginia Tech has tested more than 300 bicycle helmets.
  • The lab has awarded 55 helmets five STARs.
  • P2R’s A20 Mips includes a USB-rechargeable rear light.
  • The Pikio sample is scheduled for another ride evaluation.
