Truckee’s Navigation Center will remain at its Deerfield Drive site for a second year. In Tuesday’s joint meeting, the Truckee Town Council and Tahoe Forest Hospital District Board of Directors authorized continued operations and backed revisions to the Good Neighbor Policy. The center, operated by Volunteers of America, has provided emergency shelter, daytime support and case management since February 2025.

The program has assisted 63 people, with its shelter beds and interim housing averaging 96% occupancy. That figure reached 99% during the four weeks before a September coalition meeting. Volunteers of America said two clients entered long-term housing, while 10 others reached stable housing through diversion or relocation; none later returned. Eleven additional households may move into housing within 30 to 60 days. Police calls near Deerfield Drive and Coldstream Road fell from an April high of 33 to four in August, while rule-related sit-outs dropped from 19 in March to zero in September.

Each governing body separately approved as much as $235,000 through agreements with Nevada County. That money depends on Nevada County securing and accepting the grant it is pursuing to buy the building. The Town Council also authorized up to $235,000 from surplus general-fund revenue for shelter and interim housing serving as many as 16 people, potentially increasing to a 25-bed surge arrangement. Local partners will shape that model and future financing. At least three coalition partner meetings are planned during the next 18 months, tentatively in February, June and December 2027.
