WestJet Cancels Flights to 13 International Destinations

Three destinations are long-haul, while the others are in the Caribbean, Mexico and the United States.

A broad international retreat

WestJet has removed service to 13 destinations outside Canada, reshaping a network that had recently expanded or returned to several of the affected airports. Three of the discontinued links were long-distance European routes. The other cuts affect destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico and the United States. Every destination involved either had only recently gained WestJet flights or had welcomed the carrier back after an earlier absence.

The airline, Canada’s second-largest, partly connected its decision to close the three European routes with rising fuel costs. Route performance may also have played a role, since airlines routinely reassess services that do not meet financial or network expectations. All 13 destinations lost WestJet service during 2026.

The contraction also reached WestJet’s Canadian map. Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, both located in Alberta, lost their flights in June 2026. Those two domestic airports are separate from the 13 international destinations but demonstrate that the airline’s recent reductions have not been limited to overseas and warm-weather services.

Glasgow returns then disappears

Glasgow International Airport has had a particularly uneven history with WestJet. The airline first arrived there in May 2015, making Glasgow its second European destination after service to Dublin began in May 2014. Initially, passengers from Toronto Pearson International Airport traveled through Halifax Stanfield International Airport. That arrangement remained in place through October 2018.

WestJet did not serve Glasgow from 2019 through 2021. A direct Toronto–Glasgow flight then debuted in May 2022, but it survived for only one season. The airline restored the route in May 2026, only to withdraw again after another single season. Service from Halifax also commenced in May 2026.

Travelers still have a WestJet option at Edinburgh, which is roughly an hour from Glasgow. Even so, the Glasgow cut closes a route that had twice returned after previous interruptions, including its latest revival just months before the 2026 withdrawal.

Cuba service disappears

Seven of the 13 eliminated international markets are in Cuba. Their removal means WestJet has completely left the country for now. Air Canada and Air Transat have also withdrawn their services there. Cuba had long drawn large numbers of Canadian package-vacation travelers, but operations were suspended earlier in the year following prominent electricity failures, limited fuel supplies, food shortages and problems affecting transportation.

Flights are expected to resume eventually, although no restart point has been established. Meanwhile, demand has shifted toward other warm-weather destinations, including the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Across all airlines, Cirium Diio figures indicate that Canadian departures to those two markets are more numerous in 2026 than during any previous year.

Some of the discontinued Cuba routes operated from Montréal Trudeau International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport and had come to WestJet through Sunwing. The loss of seven markets in one country accounts for more than half of the airline’s 13 international destination cuts.

Guadalajara reaches its finale

The Calgary International Airport route to Guadalajara International Airport was another short-lived addition. It opened on December 7, 2025, creating the first nonstop passenger connection between the large Mexican city and both Calgary and Alberta. WestJet began with departures on Tuesdays and Sundays, then reduced the summer timetable to Sundays only.

Booking information indicates that most travelers on the service flew directly between Calgary and Guadalajara rather than making wider connections. The last departure is scheduled for October 18, using a Boeing 737-800 configured for 174 passengers. Flight WS2278 is due to depart Calgary at 9:20 AM and reach Mexico at 2:35 PM. The return, WS2279, is scheduled to leave at 3:25 PM and land at 8:35 PM.

WestJet’s published schedule extends through next August, and no later Guadalajara flights can be reserved within that window. For travelers holding plans tied to any of the removed destinations, the cuts mean checking whether their journeys require a different route, airport or airline.
