Travel Cards Can Speed the Path to Elite Status

Several cards provide status credits, automatic recognition or spending-based boosts for airline and hotel programs.

Frequent travelers can use certain credit cards to reach airline or hotel elite tiers with less traditional travel. Depending on the card, the benefit may come automatically, through annual credits or by putting everyday purchases toward status. That can help unlock perks such as checked-bag waivers, room upgrades, lounge access, later checkout and extra points.

The options vary by loyalty program. Alaska and Hawaiian travelers can receive 10,000 Atmos Rewards status points each card anniversary with the Atmos Rewards Summit card; spending $20,000 can bring Silver, while $60,000 can bring Gold. The Chase Air Canada Aeroplan card includes Aeroplan 25K status every year and offers a path to 35K after $75,000 in annual spending. Air France and KLM customers can earn Flying Blue Experience Points from card ownership and additional spending, with the listed offer including a route to Silver after its spending requirement.

Other examples include cards that add Loyalty Points for American Airlines progress, provide a Delta Medallion qualifying-dollar boost or award United Premier qualifying points. Hotel-focused cards can grant IHG One Rewards Diamond and Hyatt Explorist after $75,000 spent in a calendar year. No currently available card for new applicants gives automatic status with a major U.S. airline, but several can reduce the flying or nights otherwise required.

What to know
  • Atmos Rewards Summit offers two Alaska lounge passes each quarter.
  • Aeroplan 25K includes five eUpgrade credits.
  • Flying Blue cardholders receive 20 XP at each account anniversary.
  • Some hotel cards turn annual spending into elite-tier access.
