A strong coastal storm could complicate Friday and weekend air travel across the Northeast, with New England facing the greatest trouble. Boston Logan’s operator is preparing passengers for cancellations and delays and is urging them to confirm flight details with their airline before heading to the airport. Rain, powerful wind gusts and possible coastal flooding are expected, with Boston, Cape Cod and Long Island among the areas most exposed. Storm conditions could extend as far south as the Carolinas.

United, American and JetBlue are allowing travelers to change eligible flights without a fee for travel between Friday and Sunday. Boston, New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports, Newark, and Providence appear on all three airlines’ affected-airport lists. JetBlue also includes Islip, Nantucket, Hyannis and Westchester County, while American’s coverage reaches airports including Washington Dulles, Reagan National, Richmond, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Bangor.

The disruption was uneven early Friday. Martha’s Vineyard canceled half its daily flights. Boston had 35 cancellations and 11 delays, although widespread Northeast problems had not yet developed at that point.
