Saudi Arabia is now under a Level 3 U.S. travel advisory, asking Americans to reconsider visits. The State Department updated the designation on Oct. 12, pointing to armed conflict in the region, terrorism risks, incoming drones and missiles, restrictions on leaving the country, and enforcement of Saudi rules governing online activity. Areas close to Yemen have a Level 4 designation because of terrorism concerns.

The change follows reported Houthi strikes against Saudi airports. The reported death toll was at least 14. One person killed was American, while the number of injured surpassed 300. Passenger flights continue, but operations have sometimes suffered serious interruptions. Potential targets include airports, cities, energy sites, military installations and other infrastructure. Even intercepted weapons may scatter hazardous debris below.

Saudi authorities have detained Americans for recording recent incidents, according to the advisory. Officials also say older social media posts, likes or reposts may lead to arrest when authorities view them as criticism of the government or national leaders. Those actions can matter even when they occurred abroad. Accidental legal violations may bring imprisonment, fines, removal from the country or restrictions preventing departure. A separate U.S. security notice dated October 10 urged Americans to stay away from Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and nearby locations.

  • Attacks may occur without advance notice in places frequented by international visitors.
