Canterbury storm may bring around 20 cm of snow

Canterbury could collect around 20 cm as the South Island storm delivers its main remaining burst on Sunday. The most intense snowfall is expected between morning and midafternoon. Forecast models broadly match on timing, although their totals differ, particularly near Queenstown. Hutt may cool to roughly −7°C, bringing lighter snow and lowering the freezing line beneath resort bases. Wind gusts near 80 km/h may shift snow in exposed areas.

Ruapehu faces its strongest combination of moisture and wind on Sunday afternoon. Early snow may be heavy because the snow line begins around or above Turoa’s base. As colder air arrives, that level is expected to sink below 1,100 meters, improving the texture of later snowfall. Turoa could see gusts nearing 180 km/h, creating problems for open terrain and exposed lifts. Some lifts are currently running at Whakapapa, though the weather could alter operations quickly.

Showers around Ruapehu may linger through Tuesday. The broader system should be finished by Tuesday evening, with little indication of another major snowfall before early October. Later flurries appear too scattered to produce a dependable accumulation forecast.

What to know
  • Porters has finished running lifts for this season.
  • Mount Dobson’s lift season has also concluded.
  • Treble Cone is scheduled to finish its season Sunday.
  • Porters now has a slightly higher forecast total than Mt. Hutt.
