Steven and Pamela Taylor paid $8,166 for Business Class travel from Nashville to Edinburgh in June 2024. After a delay caused them to miss their planned Nashville-to-London connection, American Airlines rerouted them through Boston. The couple says they learned there that they had been moved to Premium Economy for the overnight transatlantic leg. They continued the journey, then sought compensation and reimbursement for a hotel they paid for themselves.

American first offered $493.98 in travel credits, which expired after a year, and argued that the Montreal Convention did not require a refund. Before a Nashville court trial, the airline returned $1,175.20 to the couple’s card. In September 2025, the court nevertheless awarded the Taylors $7,158.98. American appealed, and a full hearing is expected early next year after a March ruling kept the case alive.

The couple has also asked the Department of Transportation to require automatic cash payments for international passengers moved to a lower cabin and to compensate affected travelers retroactively. American says its systems cannot locate those customers without reviewing tens of thousands of records. The airline has offered the Taylors additional travel credit, hotel reimbursement and legal-cost coverage, while maintaining that $1,175.20 is the maximum owed under its own fare-difference formula. Because British Airways operated the replacement flight, the couple may also pursue UK compensation rules.
