American Airlines is adding an automatic seat-monitoring feature for AAdvantage members. After booking, eligible travelers can tell the app what they prefer, such as a window, aisle or seat nearer the front. The system checks availability and changes the reservation if a qualifying option appears.

The feature works until 24 hours before departure. Any replacement must remain in the traveler’s booked cabin, and American will not charge an extra seat-selection fee for the change. The app sends a notification when it updates the reservation. Monitoring ends if the traveler changes the seat manually or the flight enters its final 24-hour window.

Paid seats and higher-priced preferred locations remain outside the free feature. American says the tool was developed through its ADEPT technology program and uses artificial-intelligence tools during development. The airline describes it as the first automated seat-monitoring service from a major U.S. carrier. American operates more than 6,000 flights serving 350 destinations in 60 countries.

What to know
  • The feature is available only to AAdvantage members.
  • Seat matching ends 24 hours before departure.
  • Manual seat changes stop automatic monitoring.
  • Paid and premium preferred seats still cost extra.
