Rabies Cases Rise Among Bats in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties
Health officials say infected bats have been found in several local cities.

Simi Valley accounted for nine of Ventura County’s 28 rabies-positive bats identified in 2026 through Sept. 21. Four were found in Thousand Oaks and eight in Camarillo. The county tested enough bats that the positive results represented more than 22% of its total. Ventura County confirmed 22 cases last year, compared with six during 2024, four during 2023, six during 2022 and four during 2021.
L.A. County reached 69 confirmed rabid bats in 2026 while peak season was still underway, tying its highest annual count. The total included one bat in Westlake Village and two in Calabasas. The Westlake Village animal was located Aug. 22 on a sidewalk by Village Center Road and Greengate Court. The Calabasas bats appeared near homes in April and September; the later encounter may have exposed a dog.
Officials have not determined why detections have risen. Potential factors include warm, dry weather affecting bat food and behavior, greater public reporting, and development increasing contact between people and wildlife. About one-third of encounters happen indoors, where exposure risk is higher. Residents should avoid touching bats and notify local animal control about animals found inside, active by day, sick, unable to fly or dead. Anyone who may have had contact should reach a medical provider or Public Health. Rabies vaccination after a bite or scratch can protect people. California law requires dogs to be vaccinated.
