Whole grains emerged as the food connected with healthier blood pressure in a large research review. Investigators combined findings from 87 randomized trials described in 101 publications and focused on adults. Their analysis assessed whole-grain consumption alongside several measures of cardiovascular and metabolic health. This matters because high blood pressure is a major risk factor for both heart disease and stroke and affects nearly half of adults.

The clearest pattern appeared at roughly four to six daily servings, equivalent to about 60 to 100 grams of whole grains by dry weight. Higher consumption was also associated with improved LDL and total cholesterol, lower triglycerides, better short- and longer-term blood sugar measures, and reduced inflammation, including interleukin-6. Small decreases in weight and waist size were found as well. Individual effects were modest, but favorable movement appeared across most of the measures studied.

Most outcomes received a moderate evidence rating under the GRADE system. The typical trial ran for only eight weeks, and limited information was available for especially high intakes. Studies also differed in grain types, participant profiles and overall diet quality, while many could not fully conceal food assignments from participants and staff. The researchers called for longer trials with stronger designs to confirm the findings.

What to know
  • The review included 87 randomized trials across 101 publications.
  • Strongest results appeared around four to six servings daily.
  • That range equaled about 60 to 100 grams dry weight.
  • The average trial lasted eight weeks.
  • Evidence certainty was moderate for most measured outcomes.
