Prune Juice or Whole Prunes for Constipation?
A dietitian explains what to know before choosing between them.

Whole prunes and prune juice can each ease constipation, largely because both supply sorbitol. This naturally present sugar alcohol brings water into the intestine, softening stool so it moves more readily. Pectin and polyphenols may also contribute. The main difference is fiber: six whole prunes provide 3.4 grams, while one-half cup of juice has 1.5 grams, based on United States Department of Agriculture data.
Evidence for whole prunes includes a review of randomized controlled trials in people with constipation. Eating the fruit improved how often they passed stool and its consistency. In a three-week comparison, roughly 100 grams daily—about 10 prunes—worked better than psyllium. Another trial involved healthy adults who ate little fiber. Consuming 80 to 120 grams each day increased stool frequency and weight versus a control. Beneficial Bifidobacteria also rose, although prune eaters experienced more flatulence.
Prune juice has supporting evidence of its own. Adults with chronic constipation drank it every day for eight weeks in a randomized controlled trial. Compared with placebo, they had fewer hard, lumpy stools and more stools with a normal consistency. They also felt less incomplete evacuation and had relief from hard stools. Researchers found no adverse effects or notable rise in diarrhea or loose stool.
Neither form is universally better. Whole prunes deliver more fiber and are generally more filling. Juice retains sorbitol and may suit people who prefer liquids or do not want to chew several prunes. Both forms rely on similar compounds and have research behind their role in constipation relief. Beyond digestion, prunes have a low glycemic index, contain vitamin K, and have been associated in a growing body of research with better measures of bone health.
- Six prunes contain 3.4 grams of fiber.
- One-half cup of prune juice contains 1.5 grams of fiber.
- About 10 prunes daily outperformed psyllium over three weeks.
