For adults working toward weight loss, dietitians put protein and fiber at the center of a satisfying plate. Protein can ease hunger while helping maintain muscle. Fiber-rich produce adds nutrients and volume without many calories. Jaclyn Fleisher recommends about 35 grams of fiber daily when weight loss is the goal, along with enough water to limit digestive discomfort as fiber intake rises.

The experts highlighted everyday foods that supply one or both nutrients. Ground flaxseed and chia seeds add fiber, while chia also absorbs water and expands during digestion. Raspberries provide 8 grams of fiber and 64 calories per cup. Artichokes offer roughly 7 grams of fiber, and cooked quinoa combines 5 grams of fiber with 8 grams of protein per cup. Eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and skyr are protein-rich choices. Yogurt also contains probiotics that support digestion. Pistachios provide a portion with more individual nuts than cashews or walnuts, and shells can serve as a visible reminder of how much has been eaten. Unsweetened green tea contributes antioxidants and may modestly raise metabolism.

What to know
  • Cottage cheese supplies 13 grams of protein per 1/2 cup.
  • One egg contains 6 grams of protein.
  • A 1-ounce serving contains 49 pistachios.
  • Chia seeds provide protein, fiber and omega-3 fats.
