Know Your Bike Valve Before Buying a Spare

Presta and Schrader valves need different tubes, pumps, and rim choices.

A quick look at your tire valve can prevent a ride-ending mistake. Schrader valves are broad and resemble the ones found on cars. Presta valves are narrower, metal, and have a small textured nut at the top. Many lower-cost bicycles use Schrader valves, while more expensive bikes commonly use Presta. Dunlop valves are another type riders may encounter in parts of Europe and Asia.

The replacement tube must suit both the valve opening and the rim depth. A Presta tube can serve temporarily in a wider Schrader opening, but movement may damage the tube near its base; tightening the valve nut can hold it in place. A Schrader tube will not fit a Presta rim unless the rim is drilled wider, which can weaken it. Deep aerodynamic rims may need Presta stems measuring 80 or 100 millimeters, rather than the more common 40- or 48-millimeter sizes. Some inexpensive bikes also use unusually long Schrader stems.

Pump compatibility matters, too. A Schrader-only head cannot fit a Presta valve, and a Presta-only head will not fit Schrader. Many bicycle pumps handle both through separate openings, a reversible gasket, or a lever-operated head. Presta stems and removable cores can be damaged if the pump is attached roughly or the top nut is loosened too far.

What to know
  • Presta tubes commonly measure 40 to 48 millimeters.
  • Deep rims may require 80- or 100-millimeter valves.
  • Some pumps use a reversible internal gasket.
  • Dunlop valves are also called Woods valves.
