Apple’s latest Readiness feature gives some Apple Watch users a 1-to-10 snapshot of how prepared they may be for the day. It is available on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 after the watch records seven nights of sleep. The score appears on the watch, through a new complication, and in the Fitness app on iPhone.

Readiness sorts results into four levels, from Recover to Go For It. Its suggestions draw on sleep details, heart and breathing measures, recovery heart-rate variability, workouts, movement and training load. The reading can change later if you exercise or nap, and ignoring its recommendation does not trigger a penalty. The feature is intended for people with active daily lives as well as those following formal training programs.

The review found that Apple’s score gave guidance similar to readings from Oura and Whoop on one tested morning. That may make the feature useful as a single place to interpret several health signals, especially for Apple Watch owners who do not already use a wellness-focused device. Its main distinction is its setting inside a widely used smartwatch rather than a dedicated recovery product.

What to know
  • Scores run from 1 to 10.
  • Seven nights of sleep are required.
  • Readiness uses Fitness, Vitals and Sleep Score data.
