Brooks Ghost Max 4 and Ghost 18 Compared

After nearly a year in the Ghost Max and regular wear of the Ghost 18 since its May release, the author compared them during long walks, commutes, errands, bike rides, concerts and a Brooklyn Bridge crossing. Both weigh 9.2 ounces and come in sizes 5 to 12, including wide options, but they feel notably different in use.

The Ghost 18 has a breathable knit upper, a flatter tongue and a roomier toe area than earlier versions. Its closer fit feels more like a conventional walking or running shoe. The distance between heel and toe is 10mm, while its balanced cushioning has earned podiatrist recommendations for stability walking and plantar fasciitis. Prevention testers from ages 22 through 69 also responded well to it. The Ghost Max uses a broader, sturdier base with extra interior space, making it more accommodating for wide feet, bunions, personal orthotics or inserts. That room also helps it meet the PDAC A5500 diabetic therapy shoe classification.

Cushioning creates the clearest separation. Both use Brooks DNA Loft foam, yet the Ghost Max carries more of it: its forefoot measures 34 mm and its heel 40 mm. The Ghost 18 measures 26 mm at the forefoot and 36 mm at the heel. That lower front profile gave the Ghost 18 a grounded, forward-moving sensation suited to quicker errands and commutes. The thicker Ghost Max softened impact during lengthy walks and extended standing, especially on concrete. Its wide base, firm heel and grippy outsole produced a planted feeling, although the heel caused some chafing during a long drive. Neither model uses the corrective medial post found in traditional stability shoes; their support comes from construction and shape.
