Burke’s long-stored paintings debut at LTCC
“What’s Left Behind” connects early Rome paintings with the artist’s later industrial landscapes.

A collection unseen in the United States arrives in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. The public reception runs 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Haldan Art Gallery on the Lake Tahoe Community College campus. Admission is free for the college community and local residents.
Oakland artist David Burke painted the “Building Blocks” works in Rome 26 years ago while completing graduate work at Tyler School of Art. After their initial presentation in Italy, they remained packed through many relocations. Burke finally unpacked them this summer.
The LTCC show places those early pieces alongside art that developed from the same ideas. Visitors will see scenes where nature and industry meet, including woods threaded through pipes, altered creatures drawn in ink, toxic play areas and works created within a Montana copper mine. Burke sees the older series as the starting point for the themes he continued exploring. For students, the pairing illustrates how ideas formed early in an artist’s career can shape work made much later.
- Burke is an Oakland-based artist.
- The early paintings were created in Rome.
- Light refreshments will be available.
- The gallery is at One College Drive.
