United Airlines will remove flight-segment counting from its MileagePlus elite-status system in 2027. Travelers pursuing Premier status will qualify through Premier Qualifying Points, earned mainly through United purchases and some eligible credit-card spending. The change affects members aiming for status for 2028.

The biggest increase applies to Premier 1K. The threshold rises to 32,000 PQPs from 28,000, while the published PQP levels for Silver, Gold and Platinum stay the same. Members must still complete four United-operated flights during the year; United Express flights count, but partner-operated trips do not.

The shift matters most for travelers who have relied on many flight segments plus a smaller amount of spending to reach status. Those members will need more PQPs under the new structure, while travelers who already qualify through PQPs may see little difference apart from the tougher 1K target. Eligible United cardholders will receive a starting deposit equal to 5% of the PQPs required for their current status. People who open an eligible card by Dec. 31 can receive that deposit for the following year. United says the change is intended to create one primary measure for earning status and ends the need for segment-focused mileage runs.
