Why Lifemiles stands out

Avianca Lifemiles can unlock valuable award options across Star Alliance, particularly for travelers comfortable working with a foreign carrier’s loyalty program. One of its main advantages is that carrier-imposed fuel surcharges generally are not added to awards. That can reduce the extra cash required when miles are used for eligible flights.

The program also demands some caution. Award prices have changed repeatedly, and booking problems can occur. Travelers should therefore locate and verify the itinerary they want before moving rewards into Lifemiles. Because transfers may precede a transaction that proves difficult or more expensive than expected, the program tends to fit people with intermediate or advanced points-and-miles experience better than complete beginners.

Earning through flights

Travel on Avianca is one route to building a balance. Miles can also be earned from Star Alliance members, including United Airlines, Air Canada and Lufthansa. Other eligible carriers include Gol Airlines and Iberia. Flights carrying an Avianca code but operated by Clic Air can earn miles as well, although Clic is not available as a general independent award partner.

For Avianca-operated travel, the number of redeemable miles depends on eligible spending and the purchased fare. Basic and Light each return 3 miles for every dollar spent. The rate rises to 6 miles per dollar on Classic, 8 on Flex and 10 on Business. Members holding elite status may receive extra miles in addition to those standard amounts.

Partner-flight credit follows a different structure. Earnings vary with both the carrier operating the flight and its fare class. Before choosing Lifemiles as the destination for credit, travelers should consult the relevant earning chart. Sending paid Star Alliance flights to Avianca may make sense for someone who finds its redemption options more useful than United MileagePlus or Air Canada Aeroplan, including travelers who fly too little to pursue elite status but still want strong award opportunities.

Cards transfers and purchases

Cardless provides two Lifemiles credit cards for customers in the U.S.: the Avianca Lifemiles American Express Card and the Avianca Lifemiles American Express Elite Card. Lifemiles can also receive transferred rewards from a broad selection of bank, hotel and business programs, giving members alternatives to earning exclusively through air travel.

Buying miles is another possibility, and Avianca regularly runs discounted offers. Previous promotions have reduced the cost to 1.2 cents apiece. More commonly, sale pricing has landed between 1.3 and 1.35 cents for each mile. Purchasing without an immediate plan is generally discouraged, but a discounted sale can be useful when a traveler has already identified a particular redemption and needs additional miles to complete it.

Expiration and elite tiers

The usual expiration window is 12 months after the member’s most recent accrual activity. Using miles for a redemption does not restart that period; earning more miles does. Eligible credit card customers and Avianca elite members receive a longer 24-month window. Enrollment in Lifemiles+ also extends how long the mileage remains valid.

Avianca Lifemiles contains five elite levels. From Red Plus through Diamond, qualification calls for a specified total of qualifying miles as well as a minimum earned on Avianca-operated flights or through additional services bought directly from Avianca. Magno joined the program on June 10 and has a substantially narrower audience: qualification requires flying at least 110,000 qualifying miles with Avianca each year. That threshold makes it relevant mainly to exceptionally frequent Avianca travelers.

The subscription option

Lifemiles+ is an optional paid subscription, also sometimes called Lifemiles+ World. Members can choose among Lite, Basic, Pro and Max. Holders of the Avianca Lifemiles American Express Elite Card receive Lite without charge. Those cardmembers may also qualify for a discount when selecting one of the other three membership levels.

Taken together, the program offers several ways to assemble miles and reach Star Alliance awards, from paid flights and transferable rewards to credit cards and promotional purchases. Its favorable approach to fuel surcharges can make an award attractive, but variable pricing and occasional booking issues put a premium on checking availability first and transferring only after a suitable itinerary has been confirmed.
