Nishimura wins with Callaway’s spin-focused 7-wood

The specialized club adds stopping power while her longest iron is a 6-iron.

Yuna Nishimura earned her first LPGA Tour title with a specialized Callaway 7-wood filling an important role in her bag. The club launches long shots high and helps them settle sooner after landing. At Pinnacle Country Club, she led throughout the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. Her scorecards read 63, 63 and 66. She finished 21-under.

Nishimura had asked for a lofted fairway wood that could produce extra spin and a sharper descent on long approaches and par-3 tee shots. That request helped shape Callaway’s 21-degree Quantum Mini Spinner. Callaway measured a spin increase of roughly 600-700 rpm along with a higher flight. Carbon underneath allows more mass to sit toward the top of the clubhead. The design also includes a deeper face and Step Sole. Its overall length is trimmed by three-quarters of an inch compared with a similar fairway wood.

Her lineup also shows a different way to cover longer distances. Above the 6-iron, Nishimura carried a hybrid and three fairway woods: 3-wood, 5-wood and 7-wood. Recreational players facing the same launch and stopping problems may find the tradeoff useful: slightly less total yardage in exchange for better control when the ball reaches a firm green.

  • Callaway recorded roughly 600-700 rpm of added spin.
