Mini drivers gain 11 yards from a tee but lose accuracy
MyGolfSpy found that launch, spin and club rankings changed when shots moved onto grass.

Mini drivers produced extra length from a tee, but their shot patterns widened. MyGolfSpy tested six models in 2026 from both a tee and the ground. Average carry increased by a little more than 11 yards when teed up. Ball speed rose just 2.6 mph, while the larger difference came from flight conditions: average launch moved from 10.7 degrees to 13.3 degrees as spin declined.
That distance carried an accuracy cost. Each model covered a larger dispersion area from the tee, with the average pattern expanding about 32 percent. Typical proximity also worsened by roughly seven feet. Spin affected the results differently in each setting. The two models generating the most spin led the overall turf results, while the least-spinning option performed best from a tee. Grass shots launched lower, making spin more useful for keeping the ball airborne.
The models also separated more clearly when played from the ground. Turf-shot straight percentages stretched from 46.4 to 65.3, while the tee results were divided by about four points. That smaller tee gap gave longer clubs more influence in the rankings. A demo conducted only with a teed ball may therefore reveal less about how a mini driver will perform from the fairway.
- TaylorMade’s R7 Quad led carry distance in both test settings.
- The PXG Secret Weapon posted the lowest Strokes Gained result in each setting.
- Smash factor changed very little when testers moved to a tee.
